The Woodlands Highlanders Lose Heartbreaker to Lake Travis

Highlanders fall in emotional last game for state 6A Title.

ARLINGTON, TX , -- The storied 15-0 season for The Woodlands Highlanders ended Saturday night in the Class 6A Division I title game as the Highlanders fell to Lake Travis 41-13.

The Highlanders were making their first appearance in the big game since 2003, and doing it without star senior linebacker Grant Milton, who suffered a brain injury last month during a playoff game at McLane Stadium at Baylor University.

Milton, 17, suffered a brain injury during a high school football playoff game against Austin Bowie and was taken by ambulance to a Waco hospital where emergency brain surgery was performed.

Milton, who’d remained in a coma for more than two weeks, was moved to a medical rehabilitation facility in The Woodlands last week to begin the next phase of his care.

Meanwhile, his team remained on a winning streak that carried them to the state championship game -- one that his teammates dedicated to Milton.

Highlanders players wore socks displaying Milton’s number 21 while their helmets had number 21 stickers on them as well.

Fans also got involved wearing t-shirts with Milton’s number 21 jersey that could be seen throughout AT&T Stadium on Saturday.

Highlanders senior quarterback Eric Schmid finished the game with 140 yards passing and 2 touchdowns, along with a pair of interceptions to finish the season.
