AP Exclusive: Abuse And Terror Haunt Ex-Members Of The Word Of Faith Fellowship

An Associated Press investigation reveals that former church members endured years of physical, mental and even sexual abuse.

Since its founding in 1979, the Word of Faith Fellowship in Spindale, North Carolina, has lured hundreds with promises of spiritual peace, prosperity and eternal life. Instead, an extensive Associated Press investigation reveals that former church members endured years of emotional abuse and violence –waged in the name of the Lord.

Exclusive interviews with 43 former congregants tell the tale of group beatings meant to "purify" sinners. Members were regularly punched, smacked, choked and slammed to the floor to "banish demons."

According to the AP, victims of the violence included pre-teens and toddlers – even crying babies, who were vigorously shaken, screamed at and sometimes smacked.

"I saw so many people beaten over the years. Little kids punched in the face, called Satanists," said Katherine Fetachu, 27, who spent nearly 17 years in the church.

Several ex-followers said some congregants were sexually abused, including minors, reports the AP.
