Film Review of 'Avengers: Infinity War'

It took ten years and 19 films, but "Avengers: Infinity War" brings us the ultimate and deadliest showdown of the Marvel Universe.

Ten years in the making, Marvel’s highly anticipated “Avengers: Infinity War” finally had its world premiere on April 23 in Hollywood, and Marvel fans are buzzing. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the 19th installment of the “Avengers” saga transports audiences across a dizzying array of majestic visuals and pulse-pounding action sequences as the superheroes and their allies unite for the ultimate and deadliest showdown of all time. The latest entry has wit, humor, and loads of heart to behold.

The two-hour-forty-minute “Infinity War” has the connective tissue that incredibly binds the different narratives and characters introduced in the previous 18 installments, spanning from the Robert Downey Jr’s original “Iron Man” to Chadwick Boseman’s recent “Black Panther.”

While the secrecy surrounding the plot is a huge part of the movie experience itself, we can at least reveal some of the details (no spoilers of course!) in anticipation of its theatrical bow on Friday, April 27.

Taking place two years after the mayhem of 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War,” the new movie introduces our villain, Thanos (James Brolin), a formidable tyrant set on bringing cosmic destruction to the entire universe. How exactly? He must trek the entire galaxy of planets to collect the six Infinity Stones consisting of space stone, mind stone, reality stone, power stone, soul stone, and time stone, which collectively give Thanos the infinite magical powers of the Gods.

As his quest unfolds, our superheroes and their allies unite to defend the universe. But it will not be easy. Sacrifices must be made, and we, of course, won’t tell you if any of our superheroes die in this epic battle.

On a lighter note, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Spiderman (Tom Holland) will delight audiences with their playful banter. Albeit short, the love affair between Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) is also on display. Also thrilling to watch is the riotous camaraderie among the Guardians of the Galaxy (Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, David Bautista, and Vin Diesel).

Last but not the least, the heart of the movie lies in its most compelling scene. It happens when Gamora (Saldana) and Thanos talk about the past, and despite Thanos’ imposing figure, audiences will feel his angst.

Make sure to stick around for the post-credits scene!
