Film Review: 'Black Panther'

Find out our verdict on the latest Marvel film, which stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan and Lupita Nyong'o.

A heartfelt story about honor and solidarity, Marvel's latest film, “Black Panther,” showcases a vibrant, thought-provoking and action-packed storyline that appeals to all ages. The main hero in the film is T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) — also known as the Black Panther — crown prince of the fictional nation of Wakanda.

Wakanda is the most advanced civilization and culture in the world, with high-speed monorails and flying cars. The small country is a powerhouse of technological and medical marvels, all made possible by its secret asset, an abundant supply of metal called vibranium. But what truly separates this tiny kingdom from the rest of the world is its independence — the centerpiece of the storyline.

In the film, T’Challa returns from America to assume the throne in his native homeland after his father, King T’Chaka, is killed while giving a speech at the United Nations. Upon arrival, the prince reconnects with his regal mother, Ramonda (Angela Bassett), his tech-savvy sister, Shuri (Leticia Wright) and his best friend, W’Kabi (Daniel Kaluuya). He also encounters elite warrior General Okoye (Danai Gurira), and the superhero’s old flame, Nakia (Lupita N’yongo).

Conflicts and tensions arise as the superhero takes his rightful place as the new ruling monarch of the African nation. Though the superhero is rather non-confrontational, he steps into his role purely for the sake of a peaceful Wakanda, and his courage and resolve are tested as he faces off against his calculating foes — nasty arms merchant Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) and complex soldier Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan).

The entire cast is magnificent in their roles, particularly Boseman, who is regal, forceful and charismatic. N’yongo, Gurira and Jordan are also undeniably on fire. The icing on the cake is the film’s spectacular costumes, dazzling production design, artistic hairstyles and tattoos, which are all simply amazing.

All in all, the latest Marvel superhero movie is an absolute must-see.
