George H.W. Bush: The Life Of America's 41st President In Photos

A photo timeline celebrating the life of George H.W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States, after his death at age 94.

Former President George H.W. Bush, a war hero and Texas oilman who be came the nation's 41st president, died Friday at his Houston, Texas, home. He was 94. The death of the Bush family patriarch comes almost eight months after he lost his beloved Barbara, his wife of 73 years.

Before his election as the 41st president of the United States, Bush wore many hats — a celebrated World War II hero, Texas congressman and director of the CIA. He served two terms as President Ronald Reagan's vice president, and during his single term as president, displayed forward thinking diplomacy that catapulted change around the world.

In 1991, Bush led a triumphant United States through the Gulf War, but as a deep recession hit the market in 1993, the Republican leader was defeated in his bid for another term by Democrat Bill Clinton. Power shifted back to Republican hands when Bush's son, George W. Bush, took office in 2001.
