Few things spark our collective curiosity and imagination as much as robots. But these modern marvels don’t just belong in science fiction — they are also an essential part of our world, taking the shapes of appliances and gadgets that save lives and make everyday tasks way easier.

That’s why each year, National Robotics Week celebrates the importance of the robotics industry in the U.S., inspiring children to develop their STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education through engaging grassroots events like block parties, open houses, robotics competitions and more.

Now in its 10th year, the program has quickly gained momentum, and tons of parents, teachers, and local businesses are finding new, creative ways to help kids engage with robotics in their hometowns.

“One way that adults — whether as parents, companies or organizations that are in a community — can help instill a love of robotics and STEM for kids is to provide them exposure,” explains Dr. Ayanna Howard, Professor and Chair of Georgia Tech School of Interactive Computing.

This year, National Robotics Week kicks off on Monday, April 6 — and hosting an event has never been easier! Whether you’re a teacher, parent, student or business owner, here are some event ideas that are sure to be the talk of the town:

Sponsor a robotics tournament

A bit of friendly competition is the perfect way to get kids to think outside the box when it comes to problem-solving. Organizations can partner with local schools to create tournaments where students compete in a series of challenges revolving around robotics and coding. Let the games begin!

Robotic coding workshops

Teach kids how to bring their favorite toys and ideas to life through various coding demonstrations. By demystifying how robots and other machines work, schools and organizations can encourage STEM learning while giving students a fundamental understanding of an invaluable skill set.

Offer a tour of your company

If your business runs smoothly thanks to some cutting-edge technology, consider giving your neighbors a modern-day “Willy Wonka” experience with a special look at how things run behind the scenes. After all, nothing is more exciting than seeing the real-world applications of robotic advancements.

Robotics day camp

Combine fun with practicality during a day of interactive robotics activities, where you can teach kids to code, help them problem-solve using technology, organize competitions and encourage STEM learning in a social atmosphere.

LEGO robot building parties

LEGOs are some of the most iconic toys around, which make them the ultimate tools to spark curiosity. Invite a few of your children’s friends and classmates over for a few hours of creative LEGO play. It will help them gain an understanding of construction and the way objects are built. You can take things one step further by incorporating coding education with the LEGO Mindstorms platform.

Organize a field trip

Take advantage of this week-long celebration by visiting local museums with your children or students, encouraging them to explore and learn about robotics and technology. You can even visit local landmarks that incorporate robotics, or participate in other local RoboWeek events.
