ACROSS AMERICA — Fern, a little dog tied to a mile marker and abandoned on the side of a New York state road, got a second chance at life Saturday when she went home with the police officer who saved her.

Fern, a senior chihuahua, was brought into the Peconic shelter on June 7 after Southold Town Police Officer James Crosser found her, abandoned and unable to protect herself from wildlife.

On Saturday, Crosser and his wife, Olivia, arrived at the shelter to take the pup home.
