Old Farmer’s Almanac Releases Summer 2021 Forecast

Some can expect scorching heat. Others can expect a cool, rainy summer. See what the Almanac says for your town.

ACROSS AMERICA — Ready for another prediction on what Mother Nature has in store for the United States this summer? This forecast might be more favorable than others.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac recently announced its predictions for summer 2021, which officially begins June 20. While many are likely looking forward to warm days filled with camping, park visits, bike rides and barbecues, the question remains — will the weather cooperate?

As always, it depends on where you live.

After last summer brought high temps and drought to some portions of the United States, Mother Nature will again bring the heat to a significant portion of the country, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac forecast.

Temperatures are predicted to be hotter than normal in areas including the Atlantic Corridor, the eastern Great Lakes region and the Upper Midwest, south to parts of the Intermountain region. Parts of the Pacific Northwest, coastal California and Alaska may also see warmer temperatures.

Rainfall is also expected to be greater than normal in Northeast states, the eastern Great Lakes region and much of the West Coast. The Rocky Mountain region can also expect a wet summer.

The Almanac’s weather forecast methodology comes from a secret formula that was created by its founder, Robert Thomas, in 1792. The exact prediction process remains a secret, but the periodical discloses that it uses solar science, climatology and meteorology to make its forecasts.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac, which is not to be confused with its rival forecast predictor, Farmers’ Almanac, is North America’s oldest continuously published periodical, according to its website.

Farmers’ Almanac released its summer 2021 predictions several weeks ago. Unlike its rival’s predictions, Farmers’ Almanac’s predictions are filled with words we’ve come to expect during the summer — sweltering, muggy, sizzling and oppressively hot.

About two-thirds of the country is predicted to experience above-normal temperatures this summer, Farmers’ Almanac predicts.

Want a third opinion? Accuweather, a private weather company, also released its summer 2021 predictions this month.

AccuWeather predicts an eventful summer similar to the 2020 season, which brought record-breaking deaths and damage in the form of wildfires and hurricanes.

Meteorologists are also expecting the return of derechos, a weather phenomenon sometimes referred to as an “inland hurricane.” The term became more widely known about last summer when one swept through Iowa with winds faster than 100 miles per hour on Aug. 10.
