Rare Painting Could Tie Vincent Van Gogh's Final Days To Maine

In April, a thrift store enthusiast purchased a painting in a Maine shop that may have been painted by a friend of the Dutch artist.

A painting purchased for $45 at a Maine thrift store may provide clues on the tragic last days of famous Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh.

The painting, experts say, may be a rare work by Edmund Walpole Brooke, who painted with van Gogh during his final months but had no known connection to the state, The New York Times reports. The artists shared a friendship during the weeks leading up to van Gogh's suicide in July 1890.

Though the painting is not yet fully authenticated, the signs it was created by Brooke are promising, Tsukasa Kodera, a curator and professor of art history at Osaka University in Japan, told the Times.
