[UPDATE] Death Toll From Texas Tornadoes Increases

Rough weather expected to continue.

[UPDATED] DALLAS, TX - Tornadoes ripped through the Dallas area in the dark of night Saturday, killing at least 11 people, damaging or destroying dozens of homes and hurling cars from roads and interstates, police and news reports said.

One of those killed was an infant in Blue Ridge, according to the Dallas Morning News.

The tornadoes were the most recent battering from week-long destructive weather that has hit large areas of the country, including Alabama, Oklahoma, Illinois and Missouri.

One Texas tornado hit just south of Dallas on Saturday, and five deaths occurred near the intersection of Interstate 30 and the President George Bush Turnpike in Garland, Garland police spokesman Mike Hatfield told NBCDFW 5.

Two other people died at a gas station that was destroyed in Copeville, the station reported, and one person was killed in Blue Ridge.

Amy Cortez of the Nevada Volunteer Fire Department told The Weather Channel the two people died when a gas station along State Highway 78 was destroyed by winds likely associated with the same tornado that struck Garland minutes earlier

Significant storm damage has been reported near Rowlett and Waxahachie.

The Ellis County Emergency Management Agency says about 40 homes there have been damaged or destroyed. Two people were transported to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

At least 30 homes were estimated to be damaged near Farm-to-Market Road 664 near Ovilla, channel 5 reported.
