Tornadoes Rip Through Southern States, Leaving 1 Dead In Georgia

Storm damage in parts of Kentucky, South Carolina and Georgia was found a day after a twister left debris through much of Mississippi.

SOUTHERN U.S. β€” A popular restaurant owner was killed in one of a handful of tornadoes that struck the Southern United States on Monday.

WSB-TV in Atlanta reported Scott Hudson, 60, the owner of Hudson's Hickory House in Douglasville, Georgia, died in a tornado that hit the Atlanta-area. Friends and employees confirmed his identity Monday to the Atlanta news station.

Another EF-1 tornado ripped through the town of Tompkinsville in Monroe County, Kentucky, around 8:30 a.m. Central Time, with photos shared by WKRN showing downed trees and power lines, as well as a sign ripped off a gas station. About 30 homes were damaged, according to the report, with five destroyed completely.

Yet, no one was injured in the Tompkinsville tornado.

In South Carolina, two tornadoes blew debris through four counties in the state Monday afternoon, WYFF reported, although no injuries were reported there, either.

Parts of North Carolina were under frequent tornado watches, and a brief tornado warning was issued in the Charlotte-area, Monday. The National Weather Service there is predicting severe storms to remain possible in the area through Wednesday.

Monday's storms came a day after a tornado in Mississippi caused damage in Tupelo, Pontotoc County and Calhoun City, WTVA reported.

Photos retweeted by the National Weather Service in Memphis showed several downed trees and power lines. Tupelo Middle School sustained some damage, as well as houses and businesses.

There were multiple reports of damage to homes on Elvis Presley Drive, just down the street from the home where the famed singer was born. Presley was born in a two-room house in the Tupelo neighborhood but there was no indication that the historic home sustained damage. It’s now a museum.

Weather-related modifications extended across the region to parts of Texas, where reports surfaced that a "ground stop" at the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport went into effect around 5 p.m. Monday.
