#5: Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover

Tara Westover grew up with survivalist parents in the mountains of Idaho. She never saw a nurse or a doctor — they distrusted the medical establishment — and didn't set foot in a classroom until she was 17. Through sheer will, Tara taught herself math, science, grammar and prepped herself for the ACT. She went on to attend college and eventually earn a PhD from Cambridge University.
