Here's The Cognitive Test Trump's Doctor Gave Him
At the president's request, the doctor gave him the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. He said Trump did "exceedingly well."
WASHINGTON, DC — President Trump underwent the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, a minor psychological evaluation during his yearly physical this month, Dr. Ronny Jackson said Tuesday when he briefed reporters on the exam's results. He said that Trump performed "exceedingly well."
The Montreal Cognitive Assessment is a well-known test for detecting mild forms of cognitive dysfunction. In a series of questions lasting about 10 minutes, the administrator of the assessment has the patient perform a variety of simple tasks designed to test memory and the ability to perform basic tasks.
“There’s no indication whatsoever that he has any cognitive issues,” Jackson said. “I’ve found no reason whatsoever to think the president has any issues whatsoever with his thought processes.”

Here's the basic outline of the test:
- Connect a series of ten dots labelled 1-5 and A-E in ascending order, alternating numbers and letters
- Copy an image of a 3-D cube
- Draw a clock set to a given time
- Identify three pictured animals
- Recall a list of five random words
- Repeat a list of five numbers. Repeat a list of three numbers backwards.
- As the administrator reads a list of random letters, tap every time the letter "A" is said
- Starting from 100, count down by sevens (e.g. 93, 86, 79...)
- Repeat verbatim two sentences such as, "The cat always hid under the couch when dogs
were in the room.” - Within sixty seconds, name at least 11 words beginning with a single letter
- Name what two words have in common (e.g. "bike" and "train" are both transportation)
- Say the day, month, year, and your location
Patients are scored out of 30 on the exam. A score of 26 or above is considered to be in the normal range. Trump received a perfect score, Jackson said.
