Hillary Clinton On Stephen Colbert: 'I Am Not Going Anywhere'

Hillary Clinton appeared on late-night TV to talk about her new book, "What Happened."

Hillary Clinton brought her book tour to "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" Tuesday night, where she chatted about a wide range of issues, including Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election that most prognosticators had predicted she'd win.

After introducing her to a sympathetic audience to great applause, Colbert asked the former secretary of State and senator from New York the same question posited in her book's title: "What happened?"

"It was very difficult and painful, but in the end, I really feel like I've done my very best to lay out what happened so that it doesn't happened again," Clinton said about the process of writing the book. "That's my primary goal here, so that it doesn't happen again." (For more national political news, sign up for the free White House Patch email newsletter.)

Colbert also brought up the opinion voiced by some Democrats that Clinton should just go away rather than relitigate the contentious 2016 race — one in which she won the popular vote.

"I am not going anywhere," she said to thunderous applause.

And in speaking about Russian interference in the election, she said, "You gotta understand what Putin's strategy is."

"He really doesn't like democracy," Clinton explained. "He thinks it's an inconvenient, messy process, and he doesn't like us, and he wants to destabilize our country and sow doubt about our democracy."
