WASHINGTON, DC — Hillary Clinton's emails are again under scrutiny by the Justice Department, according to a new report by The Daily Beast. The news comes after President Trump has recently called publicly for the department to open the case up and even to jail one of the former secretary of state's aides.
Citing allies of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and former department officials, reporter Betsy Woofdruff said that investigators are examining the question of whether and to what extent classified information was stored on Clinton's private server while she ran the State Department. The story does not make clear whether or not an official investigation has been reopened or if the inquiries are less formal. Previous reporting has suggested that the process of investigating Clinton and her emails, including behavior by former FBI Director James Comey, is under investigation by the department's inspector general.
Despite Trump's recent tweets dredging up the email issue, he has not been consistent about his opinion on the matter since being elected. As a candidate, he threatened to jail Clinton and led chants of "lock her up" over the issue. But after the election, he said he did not want to go after her. And when Trump fired Comey as FBI director, he ostensibly relied on reasoning laid out by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who argued that Comey's treatment of Clinton during the investigation had been inappropriate and unfair.
