Local Newspapers Take A Sucker Punch From Trump Tariffs

Tariffs are forcing newspapers to cut staff, reduce the number of days they print and, in at least one case, shutter entirely: NY Times.

The Trump administration's decision to impose tariffs on various countries for various goods has caused trouble — those darned "unintended consequences" — for all kinds of businesses. Add another group to the list: Local newspapers. And, for them, the consequences could be fatal.

The New York Times has a takeout on how the administration’s decision to impose tariffs on Canadian newsprint is hastening the demise of local newspapers across the United States, forcing already-struggling publications to cut staff, reduce the number of days they print and, in at least one case, shutter entirely.
