Newsweek On Trump, GOP: 'Insane In The Membrane'
The GOP is to blame for its own mess, a longtime conservative commentator writes.

The cover of the new issue of Newsweek features a shadowy profile photo of President Trump accompanied by the words "Insane in the membrane" and the subheading "How the right lost its mind, sold its soul — and embraced Donald Trump." Fans of the rap group Cypress Hill will recognize the main cover text as a reference to the lyrics of its 1993 hit "Insane In The Brain."
The author of the cover story, long-time conservative commentator Charles Sykes, writes:
Today, with Trump in office, the problems of the right are the problems of all Americans. And the worst part of it is that we—conservatives—did this to ourselves.
Donald Trump is the president we deserve.
Sykes goes on to trace the roots of the current state of conservatism, from the Reagan era to Trump's "birther" conspiracy theory about President Obama to the proliferation of "fake news." (For more national political news, sign up for the free White House Patch email newsletter.)
