In 1878 the City Hall/Opera House building was constructed as a complete community center housing all the functions of city government. Isreal Doan, architect, and Enos Doan, contractor, helped create the finest building of our city in the Second Empire Style. The lower level housed the mayor's office, a fire engine room, two large city council rooms, and marshal's office with five strong jail cells. The upper story theater was the core of social and cultural activities with main floor capacity of 500 with a full stage, dressing rooms and gallery. Though the fire and police stations have moved out, the mayor's office has remained and the second floor is once again a setting for both traveling troupes and home talent productions.
