The three people may have been related and are from California, the sheriff's office said.

"In a park with over 2,000 stone arches, this particular free-standing arch has become a widely recognized symbol of the state of Utah and one of the most famous geologic features in the world," the National Park Service says on its website.

According to Park officials, the trail to see the arch up close is three miles and is a steady uphill hike. Officials caution that rangers frequently have to rescue people who underestimated the trail's difficulty.
