Bus Careens Off I-70 In Utah, Killing 13-Year-Old California Girl

Authorities identified a California girl as the victim in the New Years' Eve Greyhound crash near Green River, Utah.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — A teen girl was killed and a dozen people were hurt in a Greyhound bus crash along Interstate 70 on New Years' Eve near Green River, Utah state police said on Monday. The bus, which headed west across the desert from Green River to Las Vegas, hurtled off the shoulder of the highway and plunged into a deep wash. The bus crashed about 200 feet from the highway.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what led to the crash, but one passenger reported the driver might've experienced a medical issue, the Utah Highway Patrol said in a news release.

Authorities said the teen victim killed in the crash was Summer Pinzon of Azusa, California. She was traveling with her mother, who was hospitalized after the wreck. Authorities did not release the mother's name or additional details about her and her daughter.

Cornia said a total of 14 people were aboard, including the driver. Roads were clear and conditions were good, he said. They were not believed to have contributed to the crash.

Investigators were trying to obtain video from a camera aboard the bus to help determine what happened, he said.

Lanesha Gipson, a spokeswoman for Greyhound, said the company is cooperating with authorities and conducting its own investigation.

Gipson did not have information on the driver.
