How To Support These 7 West SLC Restaurants During COVID-19 Times

Here is a list of just a few of many small and local businesses in Salt Lake City's west side neighborhoods we can all support.

These are tough times where everyone is trying to play their part in preventing coronavirus from spreading farther and wreaking havoc in our community.

Yet, it's not only our health that is threatened by a global pandemic. Our local businesses, the lifeblood of our communities who depend on customers for their very survival, are suffering too.

We may be stuck at home, but customers we still can be! Here are seven local restaurants from Salt Lake City's westside neighborhoods that, new or old, are beloved staples to the tight knit communities west of I-15 and how they prefer to be supported. Read on for which establishments you can look to in order to breakaway from another pantry meal and add a little variety to your stay-at-home life.

Santo Taco

This new-comer to the west side has already proven to be a hit. Its fast-casual cantina style tacos make for the perfect take-out lunch or dinner. While there are a couple glitches with the ordering process on DoorDash, don't worry, they won't put every kind of salsa on your burrito even if you have to select them all. But given the fact that their salsa bar (before the pandemic) was incredible, you may hope to get a little to-go cup of each kind with your delivery.

Best Way To Order: Call directly or via DoorDash

Kings Peak Coffee

Another new-comer, this brave coffee shop that could opened up in a location under the 400 S. overpass where it's almost impossible to succeed and they went ahead and decided to thrive anyway. This shop is truly local, homegrown and full of Utah pride. They roast their beans on site, and even deliver. Stock up your coffee cupboard today with Kings Peak Coffee Roasters coffee. Right now they're offering a discount on their website for all the coffee you order to support all you stay-at-homers, plus free shipping if you order more than 2 bags.

Best Way To Support: Purchase whole-bean coffee directly on the website.

All Chay

I'm including this here even though the darling all-vegan Vietnamese shop in Salt Lake's fairpark neighborhood is currently closed. I think it would be great to see a wave of activity in the form of delivery or pick up when they do decide to reopen. The last time I spoke with the owner, she told me they were closed until April. So keep a watchful eye, and call ahead to know when you can order your favorite vegan version of pho, bahn mi, or noodle salad.

Best Way To Support: I have seen them on DoorDash in the past, but keep calling to see if and when they're open.

Star of India

Star of India innovated early and made delivery via GrubHub, UberEats and DoorDash part of their regular business model more than three years ago. That's good news for you, because they have that aspect down to a science, and ordering for take out or delivery is as easy as can be. Of course they miss their dine-in customers like everyone else, but they are ready to fill you up with tantalizing Indian curries and Saags and plenty of naan. Order extra and enjoy leftovers all week.

Best Way To Support: Call an order in for curbside pickup, or take advantage of pretty much any third party delivery app.

Chubby's

When you think of restaurants that have become so embedded into the fabric of a community that they become part of the identity of that community, you think of Chubby's. This is a beloved Rose Park staple, and even that feels like an understatement. As such, Chubby's is old school, not on any apps, and totally reliant on the good will it's baked over the years from its loyal, hungry friends. Keep ordering that pork verde sauce, Salt Lake!

Best Way To Support: Call ahead for pick up. They allow customers one at a time to come in and get their food.

Hook & Ladder

This burger joint is an old-fashioned diner in more ways than one. But the one that matters now is that they also aren't on any of the delivery apps. Still, true to the 1950s style, they do have a walk-up window, which is coming in very handy in these days of social isolation.

Best Way To Support: Call ahead, get your food at the walk-up window. Be courteous to other hungry customers and give plenty of space while waiting your turn.

The Official That Sandwich Shop

If a classic deli sandwich, cup of soup and bag of chips is the variety your stay-at-home menu needs, than TOTSS has you covered. In an all-but-hidden location near the Denny's on North Temple and Redwood, this small shop has giant sandwiches packed with flavor. Customers love the Philly Cheesesteak, but I doubt one could go wrong with whatever they order.

Best Way To Support: Call ahead and place an order for curbside pickup.

For those of us who love having a local food scene, it's important to keep supporting local restaurants how and when we can. Local restaurants build community, provide jobs, and are the life-blood of supply chains. Oh, and they feed us. Let's keep them surviving now, so we can all get back to thriving later.
