Mitt Romney, the former presidential candidate and Massachussets governor, was the favorite to win the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — Former presidential candidate and Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has easily defeated state Rep. Mike Kennedy in the GOP primary and will go on to face Jenny Wilson in the general election.
According to RealClearPolitics Romney was the favorite to win the seat, which will be vacated by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch. A poll by the Salt Lake Tribune found Romney garnered about 65 percent of registered Republicans, much higher than Kennedy's 23 percent.
Romney was leading with 76 percent of the vote as of Tuesday night. In the general election, he will face Wilson, a Democratic Salt Lake City Council member who was selected via convention — something Romney surprisingly wasn't able to accomplish.
