Utah Senate Race: Mitt Romney Doesn't Secure GOP Nomination

Romney was unable to win 60 percent of the votes at the Utah Republican convention that he needed to head to the November ballot unopposed.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — Mitt Romney must now win a Utah Republican primary election in June after failing to win enough votes at the GOP convention. Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts and onetime 2012 Barack Obama opponent, needed 60 percent of the votes to head to the November ballot unopposed.

Republican U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch is retiring and Romney is seeking to succeed him.

But not one of the dozen candidates for the nomination on Saturday were able to earn enough votes, CNN reported. During the second round of caucus voting, state Rep. Mike Kennedy took the lead with nearly 51 percent of the vote. Romney came in second with just over 49 percent.
