Move To Vermont And Get Paid $10,000; Here's How

The state is offering up to $10,000 to remote workers who decide to relocate to the state and work from a home office or co-working space.

If you work remotely, want to keep your job but want a change of scenery, you can move to Vermont and be compensated up to $10,000.

A bill signed by Vermont Gov. Phil Scott this week will encourage remote workers to relocate to the state and will help them offset the costs of moving. A grant available to those who choose to pack up and move to the state will receive $5,000 per year for qualifying expenses and no more than $10,000 under the program.

Qualifying remote worker expenses include costs incurred for relocation to the state, computer software and hardware, broadband access and membership in a co-working or a similar space. The workers have to be employed by a business outside of Vermont.

Workers who want to take advantage of the grant can move to Vermont on Jan. 1, 2019 at the earliest and become full time residents of the state. Grant money will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis and for 2019, state officials have designated $125,000 for the program.

State Sen. Ginny Lyons, a Democrat who sponsored the bill, told The Burlington Free Press that the program is for pulling people in to the state. She also told the paper she hopes it would incentivize college students to remain in the state after graduation. Officials are also counting on the state's quality of life to encourage remote workers to pack up and move there.
