Morrisville's Stames and Vermont Academy Win Soccer Championship

In her first year as head coach for Vermont Academy, Morrisville's Katie Stames coached the team to a 15-5-2 record and a championship.

Saxtons River, VT -- The Vermont Academy girls’ varsity soccer team has won the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class D Championship tournament.

In her first year as head coach of the Vermont Academy Wildcats, Morrisville’s Katie Stames coached the team to a 15-5-2 record. On Sunday, November 17, the team defeated Trumbull’s Christian Heritage School 1-0 in the final. St. John, New Brunswick’s Jazmyn Creamer, was instrumental in goal, stopping all of Christian Heritage’s eight shots for a shut-out win. Saxtons River, VT junior Maggie Hodgson scored the goal for the Wildcats and sophomore Elizabeth Pitts from Raymond, NH earned the assist.

This is Stames second year at Vermont Academy. Last year she was the assistant coach, and the team was the Class D runners up. In her high school career, Stames was a three-sport athlete at Peoples Academy, competing in soccer, ice hockey and track. She earned NSCAA High School All-American honors in 2012 and 2013 and All-Region honors those same seasons. She capped off her high school career as the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Vermont. She then went to St. Lawrence University, in Canton, NY, where she finished her four-year career tied for second on the Saints' all-time assist leader board with 21. She also earned Liberty League All-Academic honors

This is the fifth straight year Vermont Academy has played for the NEPSAC Girls Soccer Championship and the third time in five years that they’ve won it. NEPSAC was founded in 1942 as an organization of athletic directors from preparatory schools in New England. It has 155 member schools. NEPSAC sanctions elite New England championship events in many sports and provides guidance in a variety of issues involving interscholastic athletics.

Founded in 1876, Vermont Academy is a small coed college preparatory boarding and day school located in Saxtons River, Vermont, serving grades 9-12 plus a postgraduate year.
