2021 VA, DC Spring Outlook: 2 Weather Forecasts Offer Prediction

VIRGINIA— As temperatures ricochet between winter chill and spring warmth, DC and northern Virginia residents are ready to put away heavy coats and boots. We'll just be switching thermals for umbrellas, if the Farmers' Almanac forecast is to be believed.

The spring equinox officially arrives in less than two weeks, at 5:37 a.m. Saturday, March 20.

In the DC region, the almanac suggests we can expect wet and mild weather to come with it. Plenty of thunderstorms are likely across eastern states in late April, which could spur tornadoes in a few cases.

Toward the end of May, an early spell of heat could cover much of the eastern U.S., the almanac said.

The overall spring weather pattern across the country will be influenced by La Niña before weakening in early summer, according to AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok. The La Niña effects could create an active severe weather season.

The Accuweather spring forecast said winter may carry over into late March and April with a last round of winter storms.

Here's the northern Virginia forecast for the coming week, according to the National Weather Service:

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 47. Northwest wind 10 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.

Sunday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 26. North wind 3 to 5 mph.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 52. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming west in the afternoon.

Monday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 37. Southwest wind around 6 mph.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 66. West wind 5 to 8 mph.

Tuesday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 41.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 68.

Wednesday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 49.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 71.

Thursday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 55.

Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 69.

Friday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 49.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 62.
