This Is The Best Sandwich Spot In Virginia

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — The best sandwich in all of Virginia can apparently be found at Route 58 Delicatessen, a sandwich shop in Virginia Beach. Whether or not one agrees if that truly is the Commonwealth's best sandwich is a topic for another day. Of note: There were no District of Columbia eateries mentioned on the list.

The information is according to a new list of the 50 Best Sandwich Spots In America from the Big 7 Travel website. While the U.S. created the hamburger, it’s also home to some of the tastiest and most creative sandwiches you’ll find. The national list runs from classic deli-style meat fillings to Latin America inspired rolls.

This ranking avoids New York’s famous Katz’s Deli in search of other delis, restaurants and food trucks.

Owner Jeff Goldberg says on his website that his aim is to bring "true New York food from a Jersey guy" to Mayberry, as he dubbed Virginia Beach.

"The stories and childhood memories are endless, but from New Jersey’s finest delis to the Carnegie Deli and Katz’s Delicatessen in New York, and let’s not forget Wolfie Cohens Rascal House in Miami, I studied in all of the great delicatessen institutions. My only diploma is this restaurant and my unwavering commitment to being as true to my roots as possible. I hope it is evident in the style, taste and presentation of my food," Goldberg wrote. "... My childhood dream has come true, and I thank you for being a part of it."

Here's what Big 7 Travel says was notable about the sandwiches at the deli:

"The 58 Deli is all about the food and atmosphere, with friendly staff and giant sandwiches that rival Katz’s or any other famous deli. Their hot Pastrami on rye bread is a beast of sliced meat that melts in the mouth. It’s a messy thing to eat something so big, but the taste is always worth it."
