False Alarm: No Active Shooter At Newport News Shipbuilding

Workers locked down an aircraft carrier after hearing a fragmented radio transmission from an active shooter drill elsewhere.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — Newport News Shipbuilding has confirmed that there was no active shooter at the site Thursday morning after reports of one sprung up on Twitter.

Spokesperson Duane Bourne told 13News Now that people on board the USS John C. Stennis locked down the carrier after hearing a fragmented radio transmission from an active shooter drill that another naval installation was conducting.

"Other commissioned vessels at Newport News Shipbuilding also chose to lock down," Bourne said in a statement. "We support their response and believe they took appropriate action."
