Happy 233rd Birthday, Virginia

Today, Virginia celebrates 233 years as the 10th state admitted to the Union. To celebrate, we used Data-Z to find fun facts about Virginia and to learn more about the state.

In our 2020 Financial State of the States report, we found that Virginia taxpayers were on the hook for $800. In comparison to other states, such as New Jersey and Illinois, Virginia taxpayers have it easy!

Between 2015-2019 Virginia’s real median household income increased by roughly $15,000. Additionally, Virginia’s unemployment rate decreased by 36 percent from 2015-2019. Data-Z shows that the greatest drop in the rate of unemployment occurred from 2017-2018. Both graphs display improvements in Virginia’s economy as median household income and employment rates increase.

In the past decade, Virginia’s Hispanic ethnicity has slowly increased. Specifically, the data shows a 32 percent increase in Hispanic ethnicity from 2010-2019.

In 2019, Virginia’s poverty rate decreased to 8.8 percent. This is a 10 percent decrease from 2018. One can assume that due to the fiscal challenges of the pandemic, poverty rates might increase in future years for Virginia residents.
