1 Dead, 1 Injured In Virginia Beach Naval Air Base Shooting

A male sailor at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach was shot and killed after he shot a female sailor multiple times, the Navy said.

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — A female sailor was shot multiple times and a male sailor was shot and killed in an isolated domestic incident at the Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach around 6:45 a.m. Friday, officials with the Navy Region Mid-Atlantic said in a news release.

The female sailor was taken to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Her injuries are not considered life-threatening, officials said.

The male sailor, who was armed with a single handgun, was shot and killed by security officers, the Navy said.

An investigation is continuing to determine how the shooter was able to get a gun on the base, which has a no-weapons policy. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is exploring the motive for the shooting.

The incident unfolded in Strike Fighter Squadron 37 (VFA-37), Hanger 145, parking lot, according to the release.

The base was briefly placed on lockdown, but operations have returned to normal.
