From Fairfax County: Green Spring Gardens’ Harry Allen Winter Lecture Series wraps up with a look at how to create a satisfying garden and the history of glasshouses and conservatories. The Sunday afternoon lectures run from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and include an opportunity to meet the speakers and enjoy refreshments. The cost is $10 per person/per lecture.
The question of what makes a garden “authentic” will be discussed on March 5. Scott Arboretum director Claire Sawyers will show how to create gardens that are both deeply rooted in their surroundings and deeply satisfying to the gardeners who create them.
The winter series ends on March 12 with a celebration of the reopening of Green Springs’ popular garden oasis – the glasshouse. Dean Norton, the director of horticulture at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, will discuss the history of greenhouses and conservatories. The much-needed renovations to the glasshouse at Green Spring were supported by the Friends of Green Spring and a matching grant.
