Northern Virginia Senior Olympics Introduces Orienteering

From Northern Virginia Senior Olympics:

Orienteering is one of the new events in the 2016 Northern Virginia Senior Olympics, to be held Sept. 10-21. It is a sport that combines racing with navigation. Participants are given a map to select routes through unfamiliar terrain to find control points in sequence which are marked with a flag and must be visited in proper sequence. The NVSO event has men’s and women’s divisions in five year age groups and will take place Sun., Sept. 11 at Lake Accotink Park.

NVSO offers over 50 events which will take place at 25 different venues throughout Northern Virginia. In addition to orienteering, other new events are a spelling bee, rummikub and Sudoku. Hundreds of adults 50 years of age and over will be competing in track and field, swimming, golf, miniature golf, 10-pin bowling, cycling, eight ball pool, tennis, pickleball duplicate bridge and much more. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded after each event.

Registration fee is $12, which covers multiple events. Participants must live in a sponsoring jurisdiction. They can register by mail or online through the NVSO website.
