A key race was Democrat Janet D. Howell, the incumbent for the Virginia Senate's 32nd District, facing off against challenger Arthur G. Purves, a Republican who ran on a platform that involves conservative stances on lower taxes, less restrictions on guns, and fewer limits on charter schools. In the 49th District of the House of Delegates, incumbent Democrat Alfonso H. Lopez faced off a challenge from Independent Terry Modglin, who ran on an anti-abortion platform as well as promoting more green energy solutions.
The three other House of Delegates races and the two other Senate races involved incumbent Democrats who ran unopposed.
