ARLINGTON, VA — Arlington pet lovers can once again visit the Arlington County Shelter in-person to adopt a new animal companion. The Animal Welfare League of Arlington reopened the shelter for in-person visits on Tuesday.

"We are still requiring masks and will somewhat limit capacity, so on very busy days, members of the public may be asked to wait outside for a short time," said Chelsea Jones, AWLA's senior communications specialist, in an email.

AWLA, which operates and staffs the shelter, stopped allowing in-person visits last spring due to COVID-19 restrictions. Potential pet owners were still able to meet and adopt pets virtually during the pandemic. Starting this week, though, all of those restrictions have been lifted.

Appointments are no longer necessary to meet pets in the shelter, which is located at 2650 S Arlington Mill Drive. Once a potential pet owner has met and selected a new companion, they can still fill out applications and make payments on the AWLA website.
