CLARENDON, VA — Arlington County Police charged a Maryland man with assault and battery Tuesday night for an altercation that occurred at a Clarendon restaurant, according to the daily crime report.

Officers responded around 11:38 p.m., to the 3100 block of Wilson Boulevard for the report of an assault in progress. An investigation revealed that a man had engaged a group of people in a verbal altercation inside a restaurant. Police say the man followed the group to other restaurants and continued to verbally harass them. A group member grabbed the man's cellphone and smashed it to the ground. When the man pulled out a knife, bystanders attempted to separate the parties and lead the man out of the restaurant. However, he hurled a beer bottle at the group, striking a bystander in the head. This caused a laceration and the bystander was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The officers located the man at a nearby restaurant and took him into custody. During a search of the suspect, police discovered two identification cards that did not have the man's information.
