Patch caught up with Robert Seldin, CEO of Highland Square, and Kena Harris, property manager at Mission Lofts, to learn more about the flexible and inventively designed community.

Patch: Can you tell us about your unique concept for Mission Lofts?

Rob: As a longtime developer, I’ve become increasingly shocked at how apartments all look the same and haven’t adapted to how people are living and working today. The lines between living and working are blurred, but we develop and rent apartments and offices as separate transactions. My goal is to create buildings that can meet the needs of its members whether they need to have a cool place to live, a flexible place to live/work or an affordable and dynamic place to run their small business.

Patch: What makes working at Mission Lofts so special?

Kena: My favorite part about working at Mission Lofts is the opportunity to connect with each new member and support their personal or professional mission. It’s my goal to make every moment here special for them. I recently moved from Seattle and am enjoying the location of Mission Lofts. We are so grateful for the local business support from places such as Pure Barre and Orso Pizza.

Patch: When you’re touring prospects, what do they like about Mission Lofts?

Kena: Our building is perfect for all the people realizing that their current apartment isn’t set up well for them to regularly work from home. They love how quiet and light-filled the lofts are, our upgraded Wi-Fi and the huge co-working lounges and conference rooms. One resident has a service dog, so our concrete floors and open plans were perfect for his needs. Another resident plays string instruments and loved the music room and the level of soundproofing our building offers. Our music room is definitely one of our most popular amenities!

Rob: Kena recently toured a couple who currently pay rent on both an apartment and office. When they realized they had the flexibility to have one loft that could serve both functions or have both their home and office loft in the same building, they were astonished. As semi-retirees, the option of the lounges and co-working spaces were also attractive for them to spread out away from their apartment.

Patch: If someone enters one of the loft spaces, what will stand out for them?

Rob: The property was originally an office building that we reimagined into lofts. The units have especially large windows, high ceilings with exposed duct work and concrete or plank flooring. The building is all concrete, which minimizes noise reduction — a huge selling point for people who spend a lot of time in their loft. Our layouts position the bedrooms and bathrooms in such a way that the living area is increased by 50 percent. If you visit our model, you’ll see that we were able to fit a full-size table and full seating area within the one-bedroom and den layout. No one else can offer that use of space.
