VIRGINIA — There's pizza, and then are pizza places that are worth the effort to get a slice. Virginia has plenty of places to satisfy that craving.

But where is the best spot for a slice?

A new list of the "Best Pizza in Every State" from Food & Wine gave shout-outs to three eateries in Virginia, highlighting them for the very different types of pizza they bring to the table. All of them have earned honors in the past from food reviewers and publications.

Here's what Food & Wine had to say about the venues:

The only thing more authentically Neapolitan than the pillow-like pizzas practically flying from the oven at Pupatella in Arlington is Enzo Algarme himself. Frustrated by so many places promising and then never really delivering the style he grew up with, the Naples native got his start back in 2007, and the response was overwhelming, to say the least. Pupatella now has four Virginia locations, and one across the Potomac in the nation's capital.
Decades before, Bob and Karen Crum revolutionized things in the Charlottesville region with Crozet Pizza, going back into the late 1970s, and the pies to this day stay close to their hippie-era roots; the business is now owned and operated by their children and grandchildren.

Norfolk got lucky with the surprising, wood-fired margherita pies at The Bakehouse, a prime example of what happens when—and you'll see this cropping up in so many states, nowadays—bread people also become pizza people. (Spoiler alert—you end up eating all your crusts.)

From a national perspective, these are the best states for pizza, according to Food & Wine:
