ARLINGTON, VA — Former Gov. Terry McAuliffe handily won the Democratic nomination for governor in Tuesday's primary election, while Del. Hala Ayala secured the lieutenant governor nomination and Attorney General Mark Herring the attorney general nomination.

Statewide, McAuliffe secured 62.23 percent of the vote to former Del. Jennifer Carroll Foy's 19.83 percent and Sen. Jennifer McClellan's 11.62 percent. Other candidates were Lieutenant Gov. Justin Fairfax with 3.54 percent and Del. Lee Carter with 2.78 percent.

Ayala won the lieutenant governor's primary with 37.49 percent of the vote, followed by Del. Sam Rasoul with 24.22 percent, Del. Mark Levine (45th District) with 11.21 percent, Norfolk city councilperson Andria McClellan with 10.64 percent, Sean Perryman with 8.10 percent, Xavier Warren with 4.18 percent and Del. Elizabeth Guzman (who dropped out of the race before the election) with 4.15 percent.

Results are also available on a county and precinct level. All 55 Arlington County precincts favored McAuliffe. The former governor failed to reach 50 percent of the vote tally in only seven precincts: Rosslyn, Park Lane, Garfield Park, Met Park, Gunston, Crystal Plaza and Dawson Terrace.

Carroll Foy, who came second in every precinct, performed the best in the Crystal Plaza precinct where she received 40.44 percent of the votes compared to 42.22 for McAuliffe.

The lieutenant governor's race didn't have the same resounding majority in local precincts. Ayala captured 33 precincts, while Rasoul won 20 and Levine won two. Levine won the Fairlington and Abingdon precincts, areas of Arlington that he represents as a delegate. But he came in third place — behind Ayala and Rasoul — in the Shirlington precinct, another area that he represents as a delegate.

In his delegate race, Levine was defeated by Elizabeth Bennett-Parker, the vice mayor of the city of Alexandria. The 45th District consists of portions of Alexandria and Arlington, including Del Ray and Shirlington. The only precincts he won in Arlington in the delegate primary were the absentee votes and the Shirlington precinct. Bennett-Parker won the four other precincts in Arlington that are part of the 45th District.

Incumbent Del. Alfonso H. Lopez easily won the Democratic primary for the 49th District, defeating challenger Karishma N. Mehta. Lopez won all 14 precincts in Arlington that are part of the 49th District.

In the Arlington County Board primary, first-term incumbent Takis P. Karantonis defeated Chanda Choun in the Democratic primary for one of five spots on the county board. Because board members serve rotating, four-year terms, the seat was the only one up for election this year.

Karantonis, who took every precinct in the county, won 67.23 percent of the vote compared to 32.77 percent for Choun.
