The latest UVA COVID-19 Modeling Weekly Update, released Friday, stated that the state should continue to see a decline in COVID-19 cases under the current course, but a large summer peak could occur under its worst-case scenario.
"Regional-level vaccine acceptance plays into these projections, so districts with higher acceptance than their regional average could fare better than projected," UVA said. "High vaccine acceptance in the Northern Region leads to a favorable projection there."

Even under UVA's worst-case scenario, Northern Virginia can expect to avoid another peak this summer due to the rate of vaccination in the region.
Across the state, other health districts could see a surge under the worst-case scenario. However, Henrico and Chesterfield counties and the cities of Richmond, Chesapeake and Roanoke would join Northern Virginia in likely avoiding another surge even under the worst-case scenario, according to the UVA model.
Vaccination rates are the driving factor behind the wide regional variations in COVID-19 case projections across Virginia. Estimates for vaccine acceptance rates vary from a low of 41 percent in the Eastern region, which includes the entire Hampton Roads region, to a high of 87 percent in Northern Virginia.
On Monday, the VDH reported only 336 new COVID-19 cases, the lowest daily increase since 329 new cases were reported more than a year ago on April 15, 2020.
The VDH is reporting a 4.3-percent seven-day positivity rate, the lowest positivity rate since COVID-19 testing started in Virginia more than a year ago.
