Arlington Mill Drive Partially Reopens; Water Main Repairs Could Affect Afternoon Commute

Update (4:19 p.m.): Repairs have run into complications and Arlington County now estimates the work will continue past 8 p.m. Wednesday, according to a spokeswoman.

Update (12:48 p.m.): County officials now say repair work could stretch past 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Arlington Mill Drive remains partially opened with one lane in each direction.

Customers in Fairlington have reported restored water pressure, though that may dip during times of high use.

Update (10:27 a.m. Wednesday): Arlington Mill Drive has partially reopened to traffic, with one lane going in each direction.

Repairs to a broken water main resumed at about 9 a.m. Wednesday. County officials estimate the remaining work will take six to eight hours, meaning the afternoon commute could again be affected.

The Fairlington area will continue to have low water pressure until further repairs are completed.

Original article (10:08 p.m. Tuesday): A single westbound lane will be open Wednesday morning on Arlington Mill Drive in the Shirlington area following a water main break on Tuesday.

Workers began wrapping up the day at about 10 p.m. Tuesday, following a 16-hour safety limit.

Repairs will resume at 9 a.m. Wednesday following the morning rush hour, Robyn Mincher, a spokeswoman with the Arlington County Department of Environmental Services, told Patch in an email.

Earlier Tuesday night, workers determined two sections of pipe would need to be replaced instead of one, adding to the needed repair time.

Police will control traffic along Arlington Mill Drive throughout Tuesday night.

The Fairlington area will continue to have low water pressure until further repairs are completed.

As of 10 p.m. Tuesday, Abingdon Elementary School was on track for normal operations on Wednesday. If that situation changes, Arlington Public Schools will post an announcement on the school's website.
