The National Weather Service expanded a winter weather advisory to include Fairfax, eastern Loudoun and Prince William counties.

VIRGINIA/DC — The National Weather Service has extended a winter weather advisory until 6 p.m. for parts of northern Virginia and warns pockets of freezing rain will move into the area. The advisory includes Fairfax, eastern Loudoun and Prince William counties as snow, freezing rain and sleet is expected to move through the Washington, D.C., area.

The winter weather advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Plan on slippery road conditions, while hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute, the NWS said.

The revised advisory includes the District of Columbia, Arlington, Falls Church, Alexandria, Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, Falmouth, Fredericksburg, and Dahlgren.

Pockets of freezing rain will fall through 2 p.m., the National Weather Service said.

Rain will end early Monday afternoon across the Interstate 95 corridor in central Maryland, northern Virginia, and Washington, D.C., the agency said at noon. Temperatures in some locations remain near the freezing mark, so the rain may freeze on contact, mainly on elevated surfaces. A
few slippery spots could exist on bridges and elevated or shaded walkways.

In the western areas, the winter weather advisory also is in effect until 2 p.m., with snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches and ice accumulation of a light glaze. The snow could accumulate in the counties of Culpeper, Fauquier, Clarke and Frederick as well as other western counties.

The winter weather advisory does not include the northwest part of District of Columbia and northern Arlington County, although these areas have already experienced a coating of snow.

Temperatures are expected to gradually rise, but it may take until early afternoon for some of the colder areas to climb above freezing and for precipitation to turn to rain or taper off, according to the Capital Weather Gang.

Temperatures are expected to warm up significantly on Tuesday and Wednesday.
