Singles in D.C. Rave the Highest Average Disposable Income
Heads Up D.C. Dreamers! Single Residents of Washington, D.C. Rave the Highest Average Disposable Income in the Country.

It’s no secret that Arlington is a great place for DC-based employees to stretch their dollars a little further due to lower costs of living. However, according to a new report, Washington D.C. residents may actually have a little more walking-around money than previously thought. Washington, D.C. was just ranked as the city where a single person can go the farthest (i.e. cover the most expenses) on the local average median income.
Essentially, based on statistics of average median incomes for single residents and average single-person living expenses in the city, single D.C. residents see the greatest leftover monthly revenue as compared to 49 other cities across the United States. For Washington D.C., single residents had average discretionary incomes of over $1,600 a month. That’s quite a heaping number considering how residents in Washington, D.C. have to navigate high costs of living. Furthermore, many single people in the city are in the process of paying off the student loans that got them to Capitol Hill.
It’s interesting to think that for many Arlington residents, who chose to live in Clarendon or even Ballston neighborhoods as less expensive alternatives to places over the bridge, the option to live in Washington, D.C. may not be as daunting as they thought. Of course, Arlington has its own special perks like our Bike Path and the Ballston Quarter and a collection of great people who balance their time in and out of the city.
