Annually, Bank of America choses some 300 high school seniors and juniors from a large pool of applicants from across the United States for its Student Leaders® program, a summer-long paid internship in which students assist not-for-profit organizations in their home communities and receive leadership training for their future endeavors.

When Bank of America announced the 2021 Student Leaders in April, Wakefield High School senior Zeinab Mukhtar was the only Arlington County resident to make the list.

Mukhtar was picked due to her history of volunteer work in the Arlington community. She is a board member with the Arlington County Teen Network, and media coordinator for EcoHouse Teens. She also tutors Arabic at a local mosque and serves as co-founder of CRESUA Sudan, a student-led organization devoted to supplying public schools in Sudan with equipment needed to teach science, engineering and technology to Sudanese students. Among the organization's projects is the design of a curriculum for building water-filtration systems.

The Bank of America Student Leaders® program lasts all summer and culminates in a week-long leadership summit, normally held in Washington, D.C. The 2020 summit was held virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions. The format for the 2021 summit is to be determined.
