What's Open, What's Closed In Arlington On New Year's Day 2020

ARLINGTON, VA — While New Year's Day is often a day to recover from the previous night's festivities, if you do plan to head out, be aware the holiday may affect the hours of area government offices, schools, public transportation and more.
We have your roundup of what's open and what's closed in Arlington this New Year's Day.
Arlington County Government Offices: All county offices and facilities will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 1.

Arlington County Courts: All courts will be closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
State courts: Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court are closed New Year's Day.

Arlington County Public Schools: Students are on winter break Dec. 23-Jan 3. All offices are closed.
ART: On Jan. 1, ART 41, 42, 45, 51, 55 and 87 will operate on Sunday schedules. All other ART routes will not operate.
STAR: The STAR office and STAR Call Center will be closed New Year's Day. Standing order rides are not provided on Christmas. You must call the STAR Call Center in advance to book rides on these holidays.
Metrorail: On Dec. 31, Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. with special late night service until 2 a.m. New Year's Day. On Jan. 1, Metrorail will operate 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. on a Sunday schedule. Parking will be free at all Metro parking facilities New Year's Day, and off-peak fares will be in effect all day.
Metrobus: Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Jan. 1. See bus timetables.
Parking: Metered parking will not be enforced Jan. 1.
Arlington Public Library: All locations will be closed Jan. 1.
Trash & Recycling: There will be no trash and recycling services on Jan. 1. Collections will be delayed one day for the rest of the week. Contact private providers for any schedule changes. The HHM Facility and ECRC will also be closed Jan 1.
Movie Theaters: Most area movie theaters will be open New Year's Day. We would encourage calling your theater of choice to confirm hours.
Grocery Stores: Area grocery stores hours are as follows —
- Safeway: Some Safeway locations will be closing early New Year's Day. Call your preferred location to confirm hours.
- Giant Food: All stores are open New Year's Day, though specific hours may vary by location.
- Harris Teeter: Open regular hours.
- Whole Foods: Many locations will be open with modified hours. Call your preferred location to confirm hours.
- Trader Joe's: Closed on New Year's Day.
