Wider Custis Trail Now Open In Arlington

WIDER CUSTIS TRAIL NOW OPEN IN ARLINGTON

Quarter-mile of trail now 16 feet wide from North Lynn Street to North Oak Street

ROSSLYN – Bicyclists and pedestrians now have a wider Custis Trail in Rosslyn as work continues on the Lynn Street Esplanade and Custis Trail Improvements project, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

About a quarter-mile of the Custis Trail along southbound Lee Highway (Route 29) between North Lynn Street and North Oak Street was widened from 10 to 16 feet, and is shifted an additional five feet from the roadway to improve safety for bicyclists and pedestrians. When the project is complete in spring 2020, an eight-food-wide grass buffer will separate the trail from the roadway.

Improved curb ramps have also been installed at the southbound Lee Highway intersections of North Lynn Street, Fort Myer Drive, North Nash Street and North Oak Street. Upgraded pedestrian signals at these intersections are scheduled to begin operating later this fall.

The project also includes improvements along about 300 feet of North Lynn Street, including:

· Wider sidewalks

· Improved curb ramps

· Upgraded traffic signals

· A new bike lane

· Decorative lighting

· Landscaping

A public art installation by Arlington County called “Corridor of Light” will also be incorporated, with prominent elements at each of the four corners of the North Lynn Street bridge over I-66.

For crews to complete the project’s work, drivers can continue to expect daytime and nighttime lane closures on southbound Lee Highway and North Lynn Street, on the following weekly schedule:

· Mondays through Thursdays: 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

· Monday nights through Thursday nights: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

· Fridays: 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

· Friday nights: 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.

· Saturday nights: 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.

· Sunday nights: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
