$4M In Lottery Prizes Go Unclaimed

Virginia Lottery: Winning Powerball and Mega Millions tickets will expire inb a few weeks.

STERLING, VA — The buyers of two winning Virginia Lottery tickets — one worth $1 million, the other worth $3 million — are running out of time to claim their prizes, lottery officials said Friday. The Powerball and Mega Millions tickets were bought in early September in Northern Virginia, and under state law, they'll expire in early March, 180 days after the drawings.

An unknown individual bought the Powerball ticket at Sunoco (now 7-Eleven) at 4647 West Ox Road in Fairfax for the Sept. 2 drawing, and it matched the first five winning numbers to win $1 million. Since then, the winner has not come forward to claim his or her prize, say lottery officials.

The winning numbers for that drawing were 6-21-41-52-62, and the Powerball number was 26. This ticket missed only the Powerball number. The ticket expires at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 1.

A Mega Millions ticket bought at Giant Food, at 21000 South Bank St. in Sterling, matched the first five numbers in the Sept. 5 drawing. Normally that would win $1 million, but whoever bought this ticket spent an extra dollar for the Megaplier.

The Megaplier for that drawing was 3x, so the prize is tripled to $3 million. The winning numbers were 11-17-59-70-72, and the Mega Ball number was 1. This ticket missed only the Mega Ball number. The buyer must redeem it by 5 p.m. Monday, March 5.
