Ashburn Man Posts Heartfelt Thanksgiving Message on Driving Safely

An Ashburn man said he is thankful for not being killed in a near crash. Read his Thanksgiving warning message to motorists here.

ASHBURN, VA — An Ashburn resident, Jerry Hayes, said he was nearly hit by another driver who sped through a red light at about 50 mph on Monday, Nov. 21.

"It was a very close call and I'm thankful to be alive," Hayes said. "If I hadn't stopped in time, I'm sure I would have been killed. Afterwards, I was overwhelmed by the fear of what could have happened. As a result, I posted on Facebook as a warning to others."

Ashburn Patch is re-posting Hayes' compelling warning here with his permission:

Thankfully, the driver who ran a red light is not being charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Thankfully, I had a guardian angel who told me to stop a half second before the other driver flew through the intersection at 50 miles per hour.

Thankfully, that car didn't plow into the driver's side of my car where I sat.

Thankfully, my wife and kids did not receive that dreaded phone call from the police.

Thankfully, my wife and kids are preparing for a family Thanksgiving instead of making funeral arrangements.

Thankfully, you are reading this and will remember to slow down and stop at the next yellow light rather than speeding up and trying to beat the red light.

Thankfully, I made it home safely last night and was able to hug my wife and kids.

Thankfully, I am shaken but still whole.
