Clinton, Bush Hager Among New Investors In Washington Spirit

The Washington Spirit of the National Women's Soccer League announced new investors on Wednesday, including two former first daughters.

ASHBURN, VA — The Washington Spirit professional women's soccer team announced a new group of investors, including former first daughters Chelsea Clinton and Jenna Bush Hager.

The Spirit, part of the National Women's Soccer League, announced the new group of more than 30 investors on Wednesday. Those involved include former Senator Majority Leader Tom Daschle, and Olympic gymnast Domonique Dawes. The group is led by Devin Talbott.

The new investor group intends to promote the growth of women's soccer in the United States, and success for the club on the pitch, according to a new release from the team. The release said that the investors' range of resources and skills will help the growth of the Washington Spirit.

Steve Baldwin is the managing partner for the Washington Spirit. "It is fitting that the Washington Spirit have an investor group commensurate with the dynamism and diversity of DC and its place as the most powerful city in the world," Baldwin said in the news release.

The Washington Spirit are the latest team in the NWSL to welcome high-profile investors. Serena Williams, Natalie Portman, and Mia Hamm are part of the ownership for Angel City FC, an expansion team that will play its games in Los Angeles in the 2022 season. In January, three-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka invested in the NWSL's North Carolina Courage.

"Our club has big ambitions globally," Baldwin said. "We're excited to be bringing the best of US football to fans worldwide."

Devin Talbott is an entrepreneur, and the lead investor of the Spirit's new group. "We share a common vision and committed purpose to elevate women’s soccer, both for Washington Spirit players and the young girls pursuing their passions on the pitch and beyond." Talbott said of the new investors.

Other new investors include Briana Scurry, who is an assistant coach with the Spirit, and Estee Portnoy, who is a business manager and spokesperson for Michael Jordan. The full list of investors can be viewed on the Spirit's website.

The Washington Spirit finished with two wins, one loss, and one draw in the NWSL's Fall series. With the second overall pick in January's NWSL draft, the Spirit selected Trinity Rodman, daughter of NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman.

In 2020, the Washington Spirit played their home games at Segra Field in Loudoun County. The club has not announced their schedule for the 2021 season.

The 2021 NWSL season will begin with the Challenge Cup tournament on April 9. The league's regular season will begin on May 15.
