LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA: Volunteers are needed for Family Planting Day, to be held Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24 in Broadlands, Ashburn. Families and individuals are welcome to join in with the Earth Day weekend event.
According to the Piedmont Environmental Council, volunteers will be putting in herbaceous plants that will soak up rainfall to help reduce polluted runoff in streams. These plants have deeper roots that will condition the soil, help to hold more rain water than regular turf grass and reduce erosion. The wider plant buffer around the pond will also help to discourage the large flock of geese that congregates there and substantially contributes to the polluted runoff. Only native species will be planted, providing the right kind of habitat for pollinators and birds.
