Free Lyft Rides For Fourth Of July Offered In Loudoun County

Free rides ride up to $15 will be available on July 4 as part of the effort to keep impaired drivers off the roads.

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA—If you celebrate Independence Day with a few drinks, don't get behind the wheel. The nonprofit organization Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) will once again partner with ride sharing company Lyft to provide a SoberRide service in Loudoun County and the surrounding region.

Riders 21 and older can get a ride up to $15 using the Lyft app between 7 p.m. Thursday, July 4 and 2 a.m. Friday, July 5. Riders enter the SoberRide code in the Lyft app's promo section. The code will be posted at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 4 at www.SoberRide.com.

The program seeks to keep impaired drivers off the roads during high-risk holidays. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 39 percent of traffic fatalities during the July 4, 2017 holiday involved drunk drivers. Of these, over three-quarters happened during the night.

SoberRide will be offered throughout Lyft's Washington, D.C. coverage area, which includes all or parts of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties in Virginia, plus the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park; the District of Columbia; and Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland.

A record 746 DC area riders used SoberRide last July 4. The program also runs on St. Patrick's Day, Cinco de Mayo, Halloween and the winter holidays. Since 1991, SoberRide has provided 76,987 free safe rides home in the DC region.
